Until early 2026, Gulf cruising was growing fast: Abu Dhabi expected 174 ship calls at its two terminals in the 2025-26 season, up 27 per cent, after about 700,000 cruise arrivals the year before (CruiseMapper, citing DCT Abu Dhabi). Then the regional conflict that began in late February closed the Strait of Hormuz, and the 2026-27 season fell apart before it started.
This post sets out what we know as of October 2026: which lines cancelled, why schedule websites still show ships that will not come, and, for anyone whose call does go ahead, how to fit the mosque into the hours between the gangway and all aboard.
The quick answer
Every cruise line that planned a regular Gulf season for winter 2026-27 has cancelled it, and several have also dropped 2027-28 (MSC, TUI, AIDA, Costa, Celestyal, Explora and Aroya). Occasional one-off calls may still happen. If your ship does call at Zayed Port, the mosque is about 20 minutes away and a 6-hour tour from the port fits a normal day.
Is there a cruise season in Abu Dhabi and Dubai in 2026-27?
Not a regular one. As of September 2026 all the brands that planned to base ships in the Gulf this winter have cancelled.
On 22 September 2026 Cruise Industry News reported that every brand with a planned Arabian Gulf winter programme had withdrawn. The reason is the conflict that began earlier in the year: Iran's closure of the Strait of Hormuz from 28 February left six cruise ships stuck inside the Gulf for about two months, until the last of them got out in April (Seatrade Cruise News).
The cancellations cover the ships that would have homeported in Dubai and Abu Dhabi or called there every week. Several lines have also dropped the 2027-28 winter. One-off calls, world cruises or repositioning voyages may still appear, but the steady stream of ships that filled Zayed Port and Port Rashid from November to April is gone for now.
| Cruise line | Ship(s) planned for the Gulf | What changed |
|---|---|---|
| MSC Cruises | MSC World Europa | 2026-27 and 2027-28 cancelled; moved to the Caribbean |
| TUI Cruises | Mein Schiff Flow | Moved to Northern Europe |
| AIDA | AIDAprima, AIDAperla | Moved to Northern Europe and Scandinavia |
| Costa | Costa Smeralda | Moved to the Canary Islands |
| Celestyal | Celestyal Journey, Celestyal Discovery | Moved to the Mediterranean |
| Explora Journeys | Explora II | Moved to Europe |
| Aroya | Aroya | Winter in the Mediterranean from Istanbul |
My cruise still lists Abu Dhabi or Dubai. What should I check?
Check with your cruise line, not a schedule website. Many port schedules online still show calls that have been cancelled.
Port schedule sites build their lists months ahead and are slow to remove cancelled calls. As of October 2026 some still show MSC World Europa, Mein Schiff Flow and the Celestyal ships at Abu Dhabi through the winter, though all three lines have pulled those sailings. The official Visit Abu Dhabi cruise schedule and your cruise line's booking page are the places to trust.
Check your government's travel advice too. The UK Foreign Office does not advise against travel to the UAE, but warns of possible flight cancellations and periodic airspace closures. If your ship does call, book shore tours with free cancellation: every tour on this site can be cancelled for a full refund up to 24 hours before, which covers a last-minute itinerary change.
How do you fit the Grand Mosque into a port day at Zayed Port?
Easily. The Abu Dhabi Cruise Terminal at Zayed Port is about 15 to 20 km from the mosque, roughly 20 to 30 minutes by road, and two 6-hour tours pick up there.
Abu Dhabi is the better port for the mosque by a long way. The mosque and palace tour from Abu Dhabi and the mosque and Qasr Al Watan tour both list free pickup at the cruise terminal (Port Zayed). Each takes about six hours and includes the mosque ticket, Qasr Al Watan and the Etihad Towers observation deck. A guest on the Qasr Al Watan tour wrote: "The tour was planned so that we were not bothered by the mass of people from the cruise ship."
Watch the pickup window. The Abu Dhabi tour says pickup will be within 45 minutes after your booked time, and the operator confirms by WhatsApp or email the day before. With a typical 8 am to 5 pm call and all aboard around 4:30 pm, a 9 am start gets you back by about 3 pm with room to spare. A taxi from the terminal to the mosque runs about 20 minutes if you would rather go on your own.
| Ship time in port | Tour that fits | Suggested start | Back at the ship |
|---|---|---|---|
| 8 am to 5 pm (all aboard about 4:30 pm) | Mosque and palace, 6 h | 9 am | About 3 pm |
| 8 am to 5 pm | Mosque and Qasr Al Watan, 6 h | 9 am | About 3 pm |
| Short call, 8 am to 2 pm | Half-day city tour, 4 h | 8:30 am | About 12:30 pm |
| Overnight in Abu Dhabi | Private mosque tour, 1 to 2 h | Late afternoon | Evening |

Can you see the Grand Mosque from Dubai's Port Rashid or Dubai Harbour?
Yes, but it takes most of the day. The mosque is about 137 km from Port Rashid, around 1.5 hours each way.
Four of the Dubai tours list pickup from both Dubai cruise terminals, Port Rashid and Dubai Harbour: the mosque, palace and tower day (9 to 10 hours), the half-day mosque tour (5 to 6 hours), the mosque and Louvre tour (9 hours) and the budget day tour (9 hours). The road distance from the Dubai Cruise Terminal is about 137 km, roughly 1 hour 20 minutes without traffic (rome2rio).
On a single day in port, only the half-day mosque tour is a safe bet. A 9 to 10-hour day tour needs a late sailing or an overnight call, which homeporting ships in Dubai used to offer. Ships that start or end their cruise in Dubai give you the easy option: do the full day before you board, or the day after you get off.
Half a day from Dubai with nothing on the plan but the mosque and a licensed guide. Port pickup included.
Check dates for the half-day mosque tour from DubaiWhat can go wrong on a port day: Fridays, Ramadan and closures?
Friday midday prayers close the mosque to visitors from 11:30 am to 2:30 pm, Ramadan 2027 shortens the hours, and state events can close it at short notice.
On a Friday the mosque is open to visitors 9 to 11:30 am (last entry 11 am) and 2:30 to 8:30 pm, per the official hours. A ship arriving at 8 am can still make the morning window if the tour goes straight to the mosque. Otherwise operators move the mosque to the afternoon and do Qasr Al Watan first, which works on a day call that sails after 6 pm.
Ramadan 2027 is expected from about 8 February to 9 or 10 March, right in what used to be peak season. Visitor hours drop to 9 am to 6 pm, with Fridays from 2:30 pm: our Ramadan 2027 post has the detail. And the mosque can close to tourists for state events, usually announced only a few days ahead, as one operator warns on its listing. The entry fee, AED 8 per person on a tour, is covered in our entry fee post.
Flying in instead of sailing: how do you still see the mosque?
Fly into Abu Dhabi and take a half-day tour from the airport or your hotel, or stay in Dubai and take a day tour.
If your cruise has been cancelled and you still want the Gulf, flights into Abu Dhabi put you 25 minutes or so from the mosque. The half-day Abu Dhabi tour picks up at the airport arrivals hall (Gate 4) and in the city, and guests report it fits long layovers well. One wrote that the operator gave "very good communication to arrange pick up from the cruise terminal" as well.
From Dubai, the full day with Qasr Al Watan and the Etihad Towers deck is the one most people choose. The Dubai guide compares it with the bus and taxi routes.

Six hours from Abu Dhabi hotels or Port Zayed: the mosque, Qasr Al Watan and the Etihad Towers deck, tickets included.

Are cruise ships still calling at Abu Dhabi in winter 2026-27?
Only occasionally, if at all. MSC, TUI, AIDA, Costa, Celestyal, Explora and Aroya have all cancelled their regular Gulf winter programmes. Check with your cruise line rather than a port schedule website.
How far is the Grand Mosque from the Abu Dhabi cruise terminal?
About 15 to 20 km, roughly 20 to 30 minutes by road. Two 6-hour tours, the mosque and palace tour and the Qasr Al Watan tour, pick up free at the terminal.
Can I visit the Grand Mosque on a port day in Dubai?
Yes, but it is about 137 km from Port Rashid. The half-day mosque tour (5 to 6 hours) picks up at Port Rashid and Dubai Harbour and is the only safe fit for a normal day call.
Is the Grand Mosque open on Friday for cruise passengers?
Yes, from 9 to 11:30 am and 2:30 to 8:30 pm. It closes to visitors over Friday midday prayers, so tours reorder their stops on Fridays.
