Grand Mosque from Dubai

The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque sits at the entrance to Abu Dhabi island, about 130 km from Dubai. You can be there in an hour and a half, by coach, bus, taxi or your own car.

Most people visit the Grand Mosque on a day trip from Dubai, and most of them book a tour. That's not the only way, and for two travellers on a budget it isn't always the cheapest. Here are the four real options, with 2026 prices.

The mosque stands between the Maqta, Mussafah and Sheikh Zayed bridges, on the mainland side of the city. Coming from Dubai, you reach it before you reach downtown Abu Dhabi, which makes it an easy first stop.

The quick answer

A guided tour with Dubai hotel pickup costs from $42 for a full day and $58 for a half day at the mosque only. The E101 bus costs about AED 25 each way, then a taxi from the Abu Dhabi bus station. A Dubai taxi is about AED 250 to 350 each way. A private car with a driver-guide for up to six costs from $199 for the day. Count on 1.5 hours each way by road.

How far is the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque from Dubai?

About 130 km, or roughly 1.5 hours by road each way from central Dubai, more in rush hour.

The drive follows Sheikh Zayed Road (E11) south-west past Jebel Ali, then crosses onto the island side of Abu Dhabi near the mosque. From Dubai Marina it is a little shorter; from Deira or the Dubai airport area, add 20 to 30 minutes. Morning traffic leaving Dubai and evening traffic coming back can add half an hour each.

Full-day tours run 8 to 10 hours door to door because of that drive: three hours of the day are on the road.

What is the best way to get from Dubai to the Grand Mosque?

For most first-time visitors, a tour with hotel pickup: the pass, the transport and an abaya for women are handled. For two on a budget, the bus and a taxi.

How do I take the bus from Dubai to the Grand Mosque?

Take the E101 from Ibn Battuta bus station to Abu Dhabi Central Bus Station, about AED 25, then a taxi to the mosque.

The steps, using the 2026 route details:

  1. Ride the Dubai Metro Red Line to Ibn Battuta station; the intercity bus station is next to it.
  2. Board the E101 to Abu Dhabi Central Bus Station. It runs about every 20 to 30 minutes from early morning to late evening. Pay with a Nol card: cash is not accepted on board.
  3. The ride takes 1.5 to 2 hours, up to 2.5 in heavy traffic.
  4. From the central bus station, take a metered Abu Dhabi taxi to the mosque: roughly 20 to 30 minutes and AED 35 to 50.

The catch: the bus goes into the city centre and the mosque is back on the edge, so you double back. Allow five hours of travel for the round trip, and take the bus home before the evening rush.

How much is a taxi from Dubai to the Grand Mosque?

About AED 250 to 350 each way in a Dubai taxi. Ride-hailing apps can cost more at busy times.

A metered Dubai taxi is the usual choice for a group of three or four who want no fixed schedule. Travel guides put the one-way fare at AED 250 to 350, depending on where in Dubai you start. Uber and Careem cover the route too, often at higher prices when traffic is heavy.

Getting back is the hard part. Finding a car back from the mosque in the evening takes planning, and the fare is similar. A round trip by taxi easily passes AED 600, which buys more than three seats on the budget tour. Agree a waiting price with one driver, or book a private car instead.

Can I drive from Dubai to the Grand Mosque?

Yes. It is an easy motorway drive, and visitors park in the southern lots. The rental company bills the road tolls.

Follow the E11 to Abu Dhabi and the signs for the mosque. The FAQ sends visitors to the southern parking lots, and the getting there page names Al Salam Gate 6 as the way in. Coordinates for your satnav: 24.41557 N, 54.47516 E.

Dubai charges Salik tolls and Abu Dhabi charges Darb tolls at its gates. With a rental car you do nothing: the hire company passes them on afterwards. Ask whether the car is registered for Darb before you leave. Driving means you can stay for sunset and the evening lights, which tours rarely do.

Which tour from Dubai should I book for the mosque?

Mosque only: the half day at $58. Mosque plus the city: the flagship day at $80. Lowest price: the budget day at $42. Art lovers: the Louvre day at $101.

  • Half-day mosque tour: 5 to 6 hours, about two hours at the mosque with a licensed guide. Morning or afternoon pickup.
  • Mosque, palace and tower day: 9 to 10 hours, with the mosque and Qasr Al Watan tickets and the Etihad Towers deck included. Lunch is extra.
  • Budget day: 9 hours, groups up to 30, eight stops including Ferrari World for photos and shop stops. Guests report lunch at a mall.
  • Mosque and Louvre day: 9 hours, two at the mosque and two at the Louvre. Not on Mondays, when the Louvre is shut.

Is a half-day mosque tour from Dubai worth it?

Yes, if the mosque is what you came for. You get about two hours there and keep the other half of your day for Dubai.

The half-day tour picks up between 8 and 8:45 am for the morning option, or between 3:30 and 4:15 pm for the afternoon one. The afternoon run is the one to pick in the cool season: you reach the mosque around sunset, see the white marble turn gold, then the lights come on. Pickup covers central Dubai hotels and the Port Rashid and Dubai Harbour cruise terminals.

Everything from pickup to the guided tour was perfect. Our guide, Hassan, was fabulous. He looks after the group, and took the time to help everyone take beautiful photos.

What should I know before a day trip from Dubai?

Pack the right clothes, avoid Friday if you can, bring ID, and skip Monday if you want the Louvre.

  • Clothes: men need full-length trousers; women a headscarf and ankle-length, loose clothes, or a tour that lends an abaya.
  • Friday: the mosque closes to visitors from 11:30 am to 2:30 pm, which reshapes every tour.
  • Monday: the Louvre Abu Dhabi is closed.
  • ID: carry a passport or photo ID; security checks apply at the sites.
  • Luggage: one flagship listing allows no luggage. Leave suitcases at the hotel.
  • Closures: the mosque and Qasr Al Watan can close at short notice for state events. Every tour here cancels free up to 24 hours ahead.

Clothes and conduct in full: the dress code guide.

A private car for up to six from Dubai: pickup at your hotel or the airport, and the mosque at your own pace.

Frequently asked questions

Can I visit the Grand Mosque from Dubai in half a day?

Yes. The half-day guided tour takes 5 to 6 hours with hotel pickup and about two hours at the mosque. By taxi or car, allow at least five hours door to door.

Is there a metro from Dubai to Abu Dhabi?

No. Take the Dubai Metro Red Line to Ibn Battuta, then the E101 intercity bus to Abu Dhabi Central Bus Station and a taxi to the mosque.

Do I need my passport on a day trip to the Grand Mosque?

Carry a passport or another photo ID. Security checks apply at the sites, the pass booking asks for your nationality, and visitors claiming the over-60 exemption need proof of age.

Is it cheaper to take a taxi than a tour?

Only for a group of three or four going one way. A Dubai taxi costs about AED 250 to 350 each way, so a round trip passes AED 600 before the entry fee.
